Which shadows can this tool reduce?
The tool targets these types of distracting lighting. These are intended uses, not a guarantee for every image.
- Background cast shadows: shadows falling onto walls, floors and other parts of the background.
- Subject surface shadows: unwanted shadows across people or objects, including photos without faces.
- Patchy shadows: uneven light and shade, including shadows that cross both the subject and background.
What to expect from AI shadow removal
The goal is to reduce unwanted shadows while keeping the scene and natural depth. It does not replace the background or flatten all lighting. Some shadows can remain, and dark areas may not contain enough visible detail to recover accurately.
Generative processing may change colors, textures, faces or small details. There is no guarantee of pixel-identical preservation, unchanged text or suitability for identity documents. Compare the result carefully. Output dimensions may differ from the original; downloads show the real file dimensions without upscaling to claim a lossless original-size result.
Free allowance and Rescue Credits
1 shared Rescue Credit per photo task, not per face. New accounts receive one free Credit shared with Open Eyes and Glasses Glare. This is not an unlimited free shadow remover: if that allowance is used, the next task uses a paid Credit. Your available allowance is checked before generation.
One retry of the same original is included after the first successful result. A failed retry keeps the first result without an extra charge, but uses the included retry. A different photo or further attempt is a new task with a new cost confirmation.
Credits are reserved when a task is created and settled when its valid result is saved. Confirmed first-attempt failures return the reservation once; an unconfirmed task remains reserved. Downloading does not charge again. See shared Rescue Credit pricing.
Your complete photo and privacy
Shadow processing sends a prepared full-frame copy to fal.ai, rather than only a face crop. Original and result files are private to your account, with a 30-day access window and scheduled cleanup. A retry inherits the original expiry. Account access and ownership checks protect photos and tasks.
Deleting a saved version removes that version’s files from MomentRescue when no active processing dependency prevents deletion. Other versions, required billing records and provider copies have separate retention. See the Privacy Policy for browser drafts, deletion limits and provider policies.

Can I remove shadows from a photo without a face?
Yes. This shadow remover accepts complete photos of objects or scenes as well as people. It does not require face detection. It targets unwanted shadows, but some shadows may remain and results vary by photo.
Do I need to paint over shadows or upload a reference photo?
No. Upload one complete photo and the tool processes it automatically. There is no required selection box, brush, face selection or reference photo.
Does removing shadows mean removing the background?
No. The editing goal is to reduce distracting shadows while keeping the original scene and composition. This is not a background removal or replacement tool.
Will every other detail stay exactly the same?
No. Generative editing can change colors, textures, faces or fine details. The tool aims to preserve people, objects and natural depth, but cannot guarantee identical pixels or remove every dark area. Inspect the result before using it. The original is kept separately; the downloaded PNG uses its actual output dimensions.
Can I try it free, and what does 1 Credit include?
New accounts receive one free Rescue Credit shared across MomentRescue tools. If you have already used that allowance, a Shadow task requires 1 paid Credit. Each photo task reserves 1 Credit and settles it when a valid result file is saved, not when you download. After the first success, one retry of the same original is included; a failed retry uses that opportunity, keeps the first result and adds no charge. A new photo or another attempt after that requires a new 1-Credit task. A confirmed initial failure returns the reservation once; an unconfirmed task keeps it reserved.
Who receives my photo, and how long is it saved?
For processing, MomentRescue sends a prepared full-frame copy of your photo to fal.ai, which runs the AI model. Your original and result are stored privately in your account with a 30-day access window; scheduled cleanup removes stored files, and retries share the original expiry. You can delete a saved version from your account when it has no active processing dependency. Other versions and necessary billing records remain. Provider copies follow the provider’s policies; deleting a version here does not independently delete provider records. This is not a promise that all providers never use data for training.
